Starlink is set to turn off its service in Samoa starting August 21, 2024. This decision comes in response to regulatory challenges, with the Samoan Office of the Telecommunication Regulator (OOTR) imposing restrictions on the importation and use of Starlink equipment in the country. The OOTR has emphasised the need for fair treatment of local internet service providers and has outlined that Starlink users must obtain official approval and a 12-month licence to legally use the service in Samoa. Failure to comply could lead to legal consequences (Samoa Observer) (APIBC).
Similar regulatory issues are also affecting Starlink services in other Pacific nations like Tonga, where the company has faced a suspension due to licensing challenges (samoanewshub).
Boating New Zealand will report further on how this will effect South Pacific Cruisers visiting Samoan Waters as further information comes to hand.
