This was a very exciting race to watch, Italy and the USA were tightly matched and the whole race was metres in it. This was the most exciting race in the entire America’s Cup regatta this 37th regatta!
The United States clinched a hard-fought victory in the second semi-final race of the UniCredit Youth America’s Cup, narrowly beating Italy by just three seconds in a gripping contest filled with penalties and shifting positions. Sweden, the early favourite following their Race 1 triumph, struggled throughout and finished fifth, while Australia rounded out the field in sixth place.
The race kicked off with a dramatic start, as Australia, Sweden, and Spain were all hit with early penalties, leaving the door open for Italy to seize the lead. The Americans, however, swiftly recovered from their penalised start, moving into a close battle with Italy for the top position. By the first gate, the US had taken the lead, crossing at 3:37, followed closely by Italy. Australia, the UK, Spain, and Sweden followed in that order, with the entire fleet separated by just 170 metres, keeping the contest fiercely competitive.
As the boats navigated through the second leg, the US maintained a slender 90-metre advantage over Italy, while Sweden languished in last place after yet another penalty. By the second gate at 6:24, the Americans were still narrowly ahead, but Italy was hot on their heels, crossing just one second later. The rest of the fleet, led by Australia, struggled to close the gap.
It was on the third leg that Italy briefly surged ahead, applying intense pressure on the US. Italy pulled out a 30-metre lead midway through the leg, but the Americans regained their composure, retaking the lead three-quarters of the way through. Meanwhile, Australia overtook the UK for third place, but another penalty in the final stages saw them drop to fifth, allowing Sweden to make a small recovery.
At the final gate, the US passed through first, just two seconds ahead of Italy. Despite their lead, the Americans experienced a momentary wobble on the final tack, hitting a bump that reduced their advantage to 50 metres. Italy seized the opportunity to close in, but the US held firm, crossing the finish line with a 100-metre lead, completing the race three seconds ahead of their Italian rivals.
The UK secured third place, followed by Spain, Sweden, and Australia in sixth after their disappointing penalty-ridden performance.
The win marks a surprising turnaround for the US, who had not been widely expected to triumph in such a closely contested race. Italy, meanwhile, continued their consistent form with another second-place finish, setting the stage for an even more intense showdown as the semi-finals progress. Sweden, despite their early success in the first race, will need to regroup after a tough day on the water.
The next race in the semi-finals will be crucial for teams aiming to secure their place in the final, and with the competition this fierce, every metre counts.
