In a thrilling match that left no doubt about their superiority, Italy’s Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli secured their place in the Louis Vuitton Challenger Series final, defeating New York Yacht Club’s American Magic in a race that will be remembered for its early drama and high stakes. This victory not only propelled the Italians forward but also marked the end of the road for the American team, eliminating them from the prestigious America’s Cup competition.

The race began with high tension as American Magic knew that a win would tie the series and force a sudden-death showdown. It was a must-win situation for both teams, but from the very start, Luna Rossa showcased their tactical skills. Although the US team gained a slight advantage right out of the gate, it was short-lived.

American Magic’s early 10-metre lead quickly evaporated as the Italians, known for their calculated racing, took control. By the time both boats approached the first gate, Luna Rossa had managed to build an 80-metre lead, which only widened as the race progressed.

At gate one, Luna Rossa passed through at 4 minutes and 1 second, with American Magic trailing by 20 seconds. The Italians surged ahead, exploiting every opportunity to stretch their lead. Their sleek AC75 foiling yacht sped down the course at 32 knots, leaving the Americans struggling to keep pace in the 10-knot winds. By midway through the second leg, the gap had grown to a commanding 500 metres.

Despite this, American Magic mounted a brief comeback, narrowing the gap to just 150 metres at the end of leg two. However, their hopes were dashed as a critical error caused them to fall off their foils, allowing Luna Rossa to regain a 300-metre lead by gate three.

The Italians maintained their composure and showed no mercy, continually outpacing the Americans with smooth manoeuvres and impeccable strategy. By the time they reached the final leg, Luna Rossa had a colossal 700-metre lead, all but sealing American Magic’s fate.

As the Italians crossed the finish line in 22 minutes and 56 seconds, American Magic followed a full minute and one second later. It was a heartbreaking exit for the US team, who fought valiantly but were simply outclassed by the Italian powerhouse.

Luna Rossa’s victory sends them into the final against INEOS Britannia, setting up an eagerly anticipated showdown between Italy and the UK. With their latest performance, the Italians have established themselves as formidable contenders, poised to challenge for the America’s Cup itself.

For American Magic, it’s a bittersweet farewell, while for Luna Rossa, the dream of lifting the coveted trophy inches closer. All eyes now turn to the next phase of the competition, where the Italians will face their toughest test yet.
