Looking for a unique summer job with a focus on marine conservation and education? The Department of Conservation (DOC) is offering an exciting opportunity for a Marine Reserves Ranger position based in the stunning Te Whanganui-A-Hei Marine Reserve. The role, lasting 8 weeks, will run from 16 December 2024 to 09 February 2025, with the intake period open from Monday 16 September to Sunday 29 September.
Located on the picturesque eastern coast of the Coromandel Peninsula, between Hahei and Cooks Beach, the reserve spans 9 square kilometres of protected marine environment, including the iconic Cathedral Cove. Established in 1992, the reserve’s primary aim is to restore and preserve the incredible diversity of marine life that thrives in this special part of New Zealand.
The Role
As a Marine Reserves Ranger, you’ll assist the lead ranger and skipper in various tasks focused on education and advocacy. Your responsibilities will include:
- Regular patrols of the marine reserve on a DOC vessel and from the shore.
- Engaging with locals, visitors, boat owners, and businesses, spreading awareness about marine conservation.
- Supporting education and advocacy events throughout the summer.
- Conducting signage checks, distributing brochures, and inputting valuable data.
The role will require weekend and public holiday shifts (excluding Christmas Day), ensuring maximum coverage during peak times when the reserve sees the most visitors.
Who Should Apply?
This role is particularly suited to students studying marine science or ecology at a tertiary level. If you’re passionate about marine conservation and keen to work in a hands-on, educational role, this is the perfect way to gain practical experience while making a difference.
Working from Whitianga, where DOC vessels operate out of the local marina, you’ll be immersed in the vibrant and beautiful Coromandel region. The role will also involve liaising with local iwi, businesses, operators, and agencies, providing a well-rounded experience in conservation and community engagement.
If you’re looking for a rewarding summer job that offers both valuable work experience and the chance to protect one of New Zealand’s most cherished marine environments, this could be the role for you.
