A tribute to a legend
This regatta isn’t just a sailing competition; it’s a vibrant celebration of Sir Peter Blake’s extraordinary life and enduring values. Known for his leadership, environmental stewardship, and sailing prowess, Blake remains an icon in New Zealand’s maritime heritage. With the support of the Sir Peter Blake Trust, the regatta embodies his spirit, making it one of the country’s most iconic youth sailing events.
Held annually on the first weekend of December, this event is the largest two-day youth sailing regatta in the Southern Hemisphere for centreboard yachts. The 2024 edition promises to continue the tradition of excellence, drawing entries from every corner of New Zealand, from the Bay of Islands to Dunedin, and even from international participants.
A festival of sailing
The Sir Peter Blake Regatta stands apart by being more than just a race. It’s a festival of sailing, fostering camaraderie and providing an educational experience for sailors and their families. Participants have the chance to meet some of Blake’s former crew, learn about New Zealand’s marine environment, and reflect on the values that Blake held dear.
The event features a lively beach village complete with a marquee, a safe environment for families, and plenty of opportunities for interaction off the water. From environmental initiatives to leadership-building activities, the regatta mirrors Blake’s commitment to making a difference both on and off the sea.
Classes and competition
The regatta welcomes a wide array of junior and youth classes, including:
- Optimist Green, White, and Open
- P Class
- O’Pen Skiff Gold and Silver
- Starling and Starling Development
- ILCA 4 (Laser 4.7) and ILCA 6 (Laser Radial)
- RS Feva, 29er, 420, and iQFOiL
For younger sailors, the Optimist Green fleet provides a supportive environment for those in their first two years of racing, while older and more experienced competitors test their skills in classes like the ILCA 6 and 29er. All participants must meet specific age criteria, with most categories requiring sailors to be under 19 by the end of 2024.
2023 highlights and what to expect in 2024
The 2023 regatta saw over 360 sailors competing in 10 different fleets, with William Mason taking home the coveted Sir Peter Blake Memorial Trophy. The diversity and scale of participation last year set a high benchmark, and this year promises to exceed expectations as entries surge from across New Zealand and beyond.
As in previous years, races will take place across three offshore courses, with safety and logistics expertly managed by Torbay Sailing Club. Event organisers highlight that the event requires 50 RIBs to run efficiently, alongside dedicated spaces for trailer parking and boat storage.
The spirit of competition and Community
The regatta holds a special place in New Zealand’s sailing community, not only as a competition but also as a developmental milestone for young sailors. Past winners, such as Josh Hyde and Caleb Armit, who claimed the Cup in 2017, are testament to the role this regatta plays in shaping future sailing stars.
The spirit of fair play and leadership championed by Blake is evident in every race, making the regatta a cornerstone of youth sailing. The sense of community it fosters among participants, their families, and supporters reflects Blake’s own ethos.
