A Day of Calm
The light winds have put much of the fleet, including Colman, into a holding pattern. However, Colman isn’t letting the slow progress dampen his spirits. With time to reflect and capture the serene beauty of his surroundings, he shared a video update showcasing his experience.
In the video, Colman highlighted the near-total stillness of the ocean:
“There’s little to no wind today, but the water is glassy and beautiful. Every so often, I feel the tiniest nudge from the current, carrying me gently southwards.”
The Kiwi sailor also marvelled at his yacht’s ability to harness even the faintest of breezes. “These boats are incredible. Even in conditions like this, I can find a bit of speed and keep moving.”
A Game of Patience
Colman’s route along the African coastline contrasts with some of his competitors, who are venturing west in search of stronger tradewinds. This divergence highlights the tactical complexities of the Vendée Globe. While the African route offers a more direct path south, it’s fraught with light winds, requiring patience and precision to make progress.
“It’s about staying focused and working with what you’ve got,” Colman explained. “The current and even the smallest shifts in wind make a difference.”
The Bigger Picture
While today may not deliver record speeds, Colman’s focus remains firmly on the long game. The Vendée Globe is not just about how fast you can go—it’s about making smart choices that pay off over weeks and months of racing. By staying close to the rhumb line and conserving energy in these light conditions, Colman is positioning himself well for the challenges ahead.
For Colman, the slow pace also offers a chance to reconnect with the natural world around him—a core part of his Vendée Globe ethos. As the fleet inches southward, the Kiwi skipper’s updates remind us of the beauty and unpredictability of ocean racing.
