The Bay of Plenty and Lakes Public Health Service has issued a health warning for the Waingaehe/Holdens Bay area of Lake Rotorua. This alert comes after the detection of high concentrations of blue-green algae, scientifically known as cyanobacteria, in the water.
Understanding the risks of Blue-green algae
Blue-green algae are naturally occurring organisms found in many freshwater systems. Under certain conditions, such as increased temperatures and nutrient levels, these algae can proliferate rapidly, leading to blooms that may produce toxins harmful to humans and animals. Exposure to these toxins can cause skin rashes, nausea, stomach cramps, and, in severe cases, liver damage.
