Colman’s strategy to head north was a daring gamble, breaking away from the more traditional routes taken by his competitors further south. While risky, the manoeuvre reflects his bold, attacking style as he sets his sights on catching the southern group of sailors.
“In the spirit of Boxing Day, I’m moving as quickly as possible,” Colman shared. “I’ve had some great conditions, found the wind I was looking for – and even more! I saw an opportunity to do something different, and now we’ll see over the next 48 hours if my strategy pays off. I’m a bit worried, but I’m enjoying it!”
The festive season hasn’t been without its challenges for the Kiwi skipper. Yesterday, he admitted feeling the weight of isolation, missing family and friends during Christmas celebrations. But with favourable conditions today, his mood has taken a turn for the better, buoyed by the thrill of racing and the wind filling his sails.

“It’s a new day, I’ve got some wind, and I’m making good progress in clement conditions. That feels good,” Colman added with determination.
With his characteristic grit and a “knife between his teeth,” Conrad Colman is putting everything on the line to close the gap and prove the merit of his bold strategy. Over the next 48 hours, the results of his gamble will become clear, but one thing is certain: this “crazy Kiwi” is leaving nothing on the table.
