In mid-November, a group of young boys from BigBuddyNZ had the opportunity of a lifetime—a day out on the water, learning the ropes of boating and fishing. Organised by Skipperi, a boating subscription service with a fleet of Haines Hunter SF545 boats, the event became much more than just a fun day out. It was an experience that bridged gaps, fostered confidence, and planted seeds of strength and connection, setting the stage for lifelong memories.
BigBuddyNZ: A lifeline for young boys
BigBuddyNZ is a non-profit organisation with a mission to provide positive male role models for boys aged 7 to 17 who are growing up without fathers in their lives. Through its Big Buddy One-2-One and Big Buddy Group programmes, the organisation carefully matches boys, known as Little Buddies, with men from the community who volunteer their time to offer friendship, guidance, and a steady presence.
These relationships often last well beyond the minimum one-year commitment, creating bonds that shape lives and nurture the boys’ confidence. Yet, the need for role models is immense, with over 130 boys currently on the waiting list for Big Buddies.
Skipperi: Bringing boating to the community
Skipperi, a Nordic-founded boating subscription service, made its New Zealand debut in 2021. Offering an innovative on-demand model, Skipperi grants subscribers access to a fleet of meticulously maintained Haines Hunter SF545 boats, stationed at marinas in Westhaven, Half Moon Bay, and Gulf Harbour.
Beyond its practical appeal, Skipperi has embraced a deeper mission—enabling people to experience our beautiful Tangaroa in a safe way. For Alexander, Skipperi’s New Zealand manager, and Amelia from the marketing team, partnering with BigBuddyNZ aligned perfectly with their vision of using boating as a means of empowerment.
A shared vision: How it all began
Skipperi’s connection to BigBuddyNZ began through Freddy Foote from F2 Communications, who first introduced Alexander to the organisation. Soon after, Eric Haigh of Marine Concierge Services, a long-time advocate for BigBuddyNZ, collaborated with Skipperi to host a workshop at Westhaven Marina.
In this session, the boys learned basic boating skills, such as tying knots and navigating the water, providing a foundation for their first trip. “We wanted to give the boys something tangible and fulfilling, while also fostering meaningful interactions,” Eric tells us.
But Eric wanted to take the experience even further.
The fishing trip: Lifelong memories in the making
On a crisp and clear Saturday morning in Gulf Harbour, a group of boys from BigBuddyNZ embarked on a supervised fishing trip that promised adventure, learning, and connection. For many of these Little Buddies, it was their first experience on the water, let alone fishing. With excitement in the air, they boarded the Haines Hunter SF545 boats provided by Skipperi, the boys paired with experienced Big Buddy boaties who were ready to guide them through the day.
Under the careful supervision of their Big Buddies role models and Skipperi staff, the boys learned the basics of fishing—from baiting hooks to reeling in their catches. The serene waters of Gulf Harbour became a classroom, teaching patience and perseverance as they waited for the telltale tug on their lines. Cheers erupted whenever a fish was caught, with each boy beaming with pride as they handled their catch, learning how to release it back into the ocean. Alongside fishing, the boys even had a chance to take the helm of the Haines Hunter SF545, supervised as they navigated the calm harbour waters, mastering the art of acceleration and steering.
This day was more than a fishing trip; it was a chance to build confidence, foster resilience, and create bonds that could last a lifetime. For these boys, many of whom face significant challenges in their lives, the experience was a reminder of their own potential and the strength that comes from community and support. As the boats returned to shore, the boys carried with them not only their newfound skills but also the lasting memory of a day filled with friendship, adventure, and the magic of the sea.
“This trip showed the boys that they are capable, valued, and supported,” said Alexander. “It’s incredible what a day on the water can do for the soul.”
The story can’t be told without mentioning the fantastic support provided by the day’s sponsors. Marine Concierge donated fishing rods, and Burnsco provided flasher rigs to ensure the boys had the tools to make the day a success. The event culminated with a shared meal, generously supported by Next Bar and Eatery, where the boys recounted their adventures and forged deeper bonds with their Big Buddies.
Sponsors and volunteers: Heroes behind the scenes
The event was a collaborative effort made possible by sponsors and volunteers. Skipperi members who are also BigBuddyNZ role models played a pivotal role in ensuring the day ran smoothly. Burnsco, Marine Concierge, and Next Bar and Eatery exemplified community spirit, contributing resources to enrich the boys’ experience.
The fleet of Haines Hunter SF545 boats, known for their stability and performance, was the perfect platform for the adventure.
Looking ahead: Building on success
Inspired by the event’s success, Skipperi aims to make the fishing trip an annual tradition. The company is even exploring special subscription rates for Big Buddy supporters to encourage more involvement.
Meanwhile, BigBuddyNZ continues to appeal for more role models to join their ranks, emphasising that anyone with a kind heart and a willingness to give back can make a difference.
“Right now, there are 8,000 boys in New Zealand without fathers in their lives,” says BigBuddyNZ’s website. “With your help, we can continue to match young boys with good men to offer friendship, support, and a good male role model to look up to.”
A call to action
The fishing trip may have ended, but its ripples are far-reaching. For Skipperi, BigBuddyNZ, and everyone involved, the day highlighted the profound impact of small acts of kindness.
If you’re inspired by this story, consider volunteering with BigBuddyNZ or supporting their mission through a donation. Together, we can create more moments like this—moments that change lives, one fishing trip at a time.
