The troubles began last Thursday when Joschke encountered engine problems caused by a corroded power regulator. Fixing the issue required hours in the engine hold, cleaning and lubricating parts to restore functionality. Alain Gautier, Team Manager of MACSF, expressed disbelief over the failure:
“The crazy thing is that the engine is new. It’s a lot to take in all at once, but Isabelle has shown incredible determination.”
A chain of challenges
The problems escalated on Saturday when Joschke discovered inconsistent keel angle readings. While investigating, she heard a sharp sound—her starboard foil had broken cleanly at the elbow. This critical component, which provides stability and speed, left the boat significantly destabilised.
As if that weren’t enough, the mainsail sheet traveler broke, and a tear appeared in the mainsail. In challenging sea and wind conditions, Joschke managed to repair the mainsail and secure the damaged traveler.
“It’s been a long and difficult day, but the repair on the mainsail has held, and that’s good news,” said Joschke.
Prioritising safety
With speeds reduced and sailing on port tack made difficult without the foil, Joschke is taking a cautious approach. She prioritises safety over speed as she navigates the final stretch towards Cape Horn.
“I’m sailing with great caution, even if it means letting my competitors go ahead. Safety is my priority,” Joschke stated.
Her focus is now on securing the boat for the demanding climb up the Atlantic. Gautier emphasised the importance of this phase:
“The important thing for Isabelle is to secure all these problems. Once she rounds Cape Horn, she’ll have time to do a complete check of the boat.”
