Sudden damage in demanding conditions
While sailing ahead of a depression in brisk yet manageable conditions, a critical mechanical element of the rigging on Bureau Vallée failed suddenly. This left Burton unable to safely manoeuvre the boat. Known for his resourcefulness and grit, he meticulously assessed the situation, explored every possible repair, and took time to reflect before reaching his heart-breaking decision to withdraw.
Burton is now en route to Cape Town, approximately 36 hours from his current position.
Persistence in the face of adversity
This marks the second significant setback for Burton during this edition of the Vendée Globe. Just two weeks ago, he successfully repaired severe cracks in his boat alone at sea. The repeated damage has pushed the integrity of Bureau Vallée to its limit, particularly in the punishing environment of the Southern Ocean.
Burton’s experience—spanning two Vendée Globe campaigns, fifteen years on the IMOCA circuit, and fifteen transatlantic races—guided his decision to prioritise safety. This withdrawal highlights the relentless demands of solo offshore racing and the razor-thin margins between success and survival.
An extraordinary competitor bows out
Burton’s departure from the race will be a bitter pill. His impressive third-place finish in the 2020-21 Vendée Globe established him as a formidable figure in the IMOCA class. His tenacity, already demonstrated earlier in this campaign where he repaired the cracks in the hull of his yacht, underscores his singled handed abilities.
As Burton sets course for Cape Town, his withdrawal reminds us of the immense challenges faced by Vendée Globe skippers. The Southern Ocean, with its ferocious winds and towering seas, spares no one—not even the most experienced sailors.
Remember our report from earlier today, the boats closer to the front of the pack are taking winds of up to 60 knots and waves above 10 meters.
