Tairua Harbour is experiencing its lowest tides of the summer over the next three days, with depths dropping to just 0.1m. Boaties, especially those in keel boats or larger vessels, are urged to navigate with care, as shallow areas in the main channel may pose challenges.
Recent depth soundings conducted by the Tairua Pauanui Coastguard revealed the main channel depth at chart datum is 0.71m. The shallowest point lies near the first port and starboard markers just past Paku Wharf. Vessels requiring more than 0.71m to float should add the low tide level for the day to their draft to calculate whether they can safely pass.
A deeper route exists closer to Royal Billy Point beach, continuing past Pauanui Wharf to the mooring area and Tairua Wharf. This alternative may provide safer passage during low tide conditions.
Already, one vessel has reported come close to grounding near the critical shallow area today, and had to callout to the Coastguard. As always, the Coastguard advises navigating with caution and staying alert to changing harbour conditions.
For boaties planning to head out, now is the time to double-check tide charts, plan routes carefully, and avoid unnecessary risks. Stay safe on the water, and enjoy your summer boating adventures.
