WASP pellet 3D printers: revolutionising boat interiors

This is some very, very cool technology: being able to 'print' large portions of boat interiors will save significvant time and effort over the legacy of fibreglass over mould. In the realm of sustainable innovation, WASP has emerged as a leader with its POWER WASP 45 HDP, a large-format pellet-based 3D printer redefining manufacturing efficiency. This cutting-edge technology has already left its mark on the marine sector, particularly in crafting boat interiors and structural components.

Sustainability at its core

The POWER WASP 45 HDP represents a shift towards more eco-conscious manufacturing. Instead of traditional filaments, this printer uses recycled plastic pellets, significantly reducing raw material costs and environmental impact. The addition of geopolymers—materials that emit up to 80% less CO₂ than conventional alternatives—further cements WASP’s commitment to sustainability. These advancements align perfectly with the global drive for greener manufacturing in industries ranging from architecture to boating.

Streamlined production for marine applications

For boat manufacturers, the POWER WASP 45 HDP is a game-changer. It has been used to create complex components such as interior panels and moulds, bypassing traditional processes that are both time-intensive and wasteful. The PolimiSailing Team from the Polytechnic University of Milan leveraged this technology to craft a boat hull mould for the Sumoth Challenge. By printing the negative mould directly, they avoided the need for intermediate modelling steps, slashing production time and material use while winning accolades for their innovative approach.

Designed for versatility

The printer’s 45° printing angle ensures high-quality finishes on large-scale items, a crucial feature for technical and aesthetic requirements in nautical applications. WASP’s HDP XXL extruder enhances functionality by enabling the use of robotic systems, broadening the scope for complex and customisable designs.

Potential for future applications

Beyond boat interiors, the POWER WASP 45 HDP’s capabilities extend to architectural and artistic installations. Its use of sustainable materials makes it an attractive option for companies focused on eco-friendly solutions. The potential to integrate 3D printing into larger production ecosystems hints at a future where such technologies could dominate construction and design.

Innovation on display

WASP’s pioneering efforts have garnered attention at events like Formnext 2024, where the printer was showcased as an example of how 3D printing can revolutionise traditional industries. By blending sustainability with cutting-edge technology, WASP sets a new standard for what additive manufacturing can achieve.

As industries like boat manufacturing increasingly embrace 3D printing, WASP’s innovations could lead the charge toward faster, greener, and more efficient production methods.
