The Facebook short Reel says it all really…
A High-Speed Intersection
The ferry was on its regular route to the city from Bayswater when it found itself amidst the sleek F50 boats zipping across the harbour at high speeds. The surreal encounter was captured on video and shared on SailGP’s Instagram account, humorously captioned, “Not even a flying F50 was stopping this ferry… That ferry has places to be.”
Passengers aboard the ferry inadvertently enjoyed a front-row seat to the dramatic practice session, watching as Canada’s boat sailed just ahead and Great Britain’s followed close behind. “Canada tries to thread the needle around the front of the ferry,” the commentator noted, adding to the tension and excitement of the moment.
Safety Assurances and Maritime Protocol
An Auckland Transport spokesperson clarified the situation, explaining that the harbour was open to all vessels during the practice session. “SailGP organisers had been notified of all ferry sailing channels within the harbour,” they stated.
The ferry’s skipper was called through the race course by the event marshal, ensuring coordination with the SailGP teams. “At no point did the ferry get to within 50 metres of any of the SailGP catamarans, and passenger safety was never put at risk,” Auckland Transport confirmed. Additionally, the ferry slowed down as it passed near the fast-moving boats, demonstrating an adherence to maritime safety protocols.
A Unique Maritime Spectacle
While this unexpected intersection of Auckland’s ferry service and SailGP’s high-speed practice might seem extraordinary, it highlights the dynamic nature of the Waitematā Harbour. The harbour, bustling with regular maritime traffic, continues to serve as a spectacular venue for SailGP, blending competitive sailing with the everyday rhythm of city life.
