Flexiteek 3: A New Era of High-Performance Sustainable Decking

Published

The evolution of synthetic teak decking Flexiteek International has once again raised the bar in synthetic decking with the introduction of Flexiteek 3, a revolutionary new product designed to offer superior performance, enhanced sustainability, and the timeless aesthetic of real teak. The latest iteration of the company’s renowned decking solution has already earned a prestigious nomination for the DAME Design Awards at METSTRADE, underscoring its innovation and industry impact.

Pioneering change in marine decking

Since its founding in 2000, Flexiteek has been at the forefront of synthetic marine decking. Its durable, low-maintenance, and environmentally friendly solutions offer an alternative to traditional teak. The launch of Flexiteek 2G in 2014 set new industry standards, and now, with Flexiteek 3, the company continues to evolve to meet the demands of modern boat owners, builders, and refitters.

Flexiteek 3 enhances both the performance and sustainability of synthetic decking, achieving an appearance that closely resembles real teak, complete with intricate graining details and a colour palette that mimics the natural ageing process of wood.

Advanced sustainability and performance

One of Flexiteek 3’s most significant advancements is its sustainability. The new decking is made using bio-attributed PVC, a renewable material that reduces greenhouse gas emissions by up to 80% compared to conventional fossil-based PVC. Additionally, it is manufactured using REACH-compliant phthalate-free plasticisers with low migratory performance, ensuring that it remains environmentally friendly throughout its lifespan. When the decking is no longer needed, it is 100% recyclable, reducing its environmental footprint even further.

Tomas Gustafsson, CEO of Flexiteek International, highlights the importance of these innovations:

“We are excited to release Flexiteek 3, especially at a show as central to the marine industry as METSTRADE. Our new third generation offers enhanced durability, improved aesthetics, and greater sustainability, meeting the evolving needs of our customers. We are delighted to be shortlisted for the DAME Design Awards this year.”

Key features of Flexiteek 3

Flexiteek 3 is packed with enhancements that make it a top choice for boat owners and industry professionals:

  • Expanded Colour Options: The decking is available in five main teak-inspired colours—Teak, Scrubbed, Bleached, Weathered, and the new Ash option. Additionally, there are six dark wood and monochrome colours, including Walnut, Vintage, Charcoal, Grey, Carbon, and Off-White.
  • Enhanced Cooling: It cools up to 30% faster than other synthetic decking, making it more comfortable underfoot in hot climates.
  • Lightweight Design: At just 4.5kg per square metre, Flexiteek 3 is up to 35% lighter than other composite decking options, an advantage for performance-oriented boats and multihulls.
  • New Thin Profile: A new 3.5mm thin option is available, offering further weight savings ideal for high-performance applications.
  • Peel-and-Stick Installation: Collaborating with 3M, Flexiteek has developed an innovative ‘peel and stick’ system that dramatically reduces installation time by eliminating adhesive curing times, allowing boat owners to use their new decks almost immediately.

A sustainable alternative to teak

With the increasing demand for sustainable marine materials, Flexiteek 3 is positioned as an ideal replacement for traditional teak. Unlike teak logging, which contributes to deforestation and habitat destruction, Flexiteek 3’s bio-attributed PVC is derived from Tall Oil, a byproduct of the wood industry. This approach ensures that no additional trees are harvested for production, supporting a more sustainable marine industry.

Flexiteek International has also taken a proactive approach to environmental responsibility. The company has planted nearly 45,000 trees in endangered habitats worldwide through its partnership with the World Land Trust, helping to protect ecosystems that are often impacted by teak and tropical hardwood farming. Additionally, Flexiteek supports Ocean Cleanup initiatives, contributing to the removal of harmful plastics from the world’s oceans and waterways.

Low-maintenance and easy-to-clean

Flexiteek 3 is not just an environmentally friendly alternative but also a practical one. Its innovative surface reduces the need for harsh cleaning products by up to 80%, as most spills and stains can be wiped away with fresh water. For more stubborn stains, a pressure washer can be used without the need for chemical cleaners.

Tomas Gustafsson elaborates:

“We have created Flexiteek 3 to help improve the maintenance of our synthetic decks. By doing this, we have reduced the need for cleaning products by about 80%, as most daily stains and spills can be removed with fresh water. A pressure washer is a good way to remove more stubborn stains without the need for chemicals.”

The future of marine decking

With its combination of high performance, aesthetic appeal, and environmental responsibility, Flexiteek 3 is set to redefine the future of marine decking. Whether for new builds or refits, it offers a compelling alternative to traditional teak and less sustainable synthetic options.

Flexiteek 3 has already captured the attention of the global boating community with its DAME Design Awards nomination. As it becomes more widely available, it is expected to become a staple on yachts and boats worldwide. Boat owners looking for a sustainable, stylish, and practical decking solution will find Flexiteek 3 an exceptional choice.
