Letter to the Editor: We have the ability
After reading the John MacFarlane series of articles in Boating NZ, I would like to make the following comments.
The concept of retaining the Percy Vos boatyard for traditional boat maintenance and repair is imperative. It appears the Percy Vos Charitable Trust (PVCT) has offered the funds necessary to restore the shed and slipway and so, together with CYA members providing voluntary labour and expertise backed up with the experience of certain of its members in running boatyards and slipways, this would put true ownership fairly and squarely back with the people who really do care about retaining some NZ history.
I am the proud owner of the iconic pilot vessel MV Akarana (I believe Akarana is the Maori word for Auckland). She was built for the Auckland Harbour Board in 1960.
I would suggest that Panuku step aside and give every assistance to those PVCT and CYA stalwarts who are the real owners of this part of Auckland’s maritime history.
