HOME-GROWN CENTREBOARD CLASSES – PART I I

In the first part of this series Harold Kidd covered three of the most important unballasted centreboard classes of the ‘modern’ era, small yachts, intended to provide uniform performance, that were recognisably efficient and practical even by today’s standards.

The prop’s gone AWOL

There’s a certain expectation when you push the throttle into gear, waiting for that reassuring little clunk as the boat starts to move. If, instead, the engine revs slightly too high and the boat doesn’t respond, there’ll be a hollow feeling in the pit of your stomach. You’ll know you’re floating on an expensive barge. The prop’s gone AWOL.

Staying safe crossing a bar

Crossing a sand bar can be a dangerous endeavour, even for the most seasoned boatie. Each year boats are damaged and people are injured or killed when a crossing goes wrong. Places like Manukau, Raglan and Kawhia, in particular, have notoriously difficult bars.
