COX MARINE OVERCOMES SUPPLY CHAIN DELAYS

COX MARINE, THE UK-BASED MANUFACTURER of 300hp diesel outboards has brought its PTT (power, tilt and trim) production in-house to alleviate pressures caused by COVID-related supply chain  disruptions.

Cox Marine began production of the CXO300 in May 2020 and has seen demand grow strongly for this diesel outboard. But the pandemic had a significant impact upon their supply chain – particularly the delivery of the major component, the PTT  system.

This in-house move enables Cox to maintain high standards throughout the build of the  diesel outboard.  A ‘no fault forward’ philosophy ensures minimal assembly error and a streamlined approach to deliver the highest levels of quality.

Hugh Hudleston, head of sales at Cox Powertrain, says: “The pandemic has clearly had a long-term effect on the global supply chain, and this has also affected the marine market. The decision to bring the PTT line in-house is a very positive step for Cox as a business as it allows us to maintain control and keep up with the demand of the 300hp diesel outboard engine, while also minimising the potential for supply delays.”

Cox is supported by a worldwide distributor network made up of 35 distributors covering 100 countries.

55-knot superyacht

Studio Arnaboldi collaborated with the shipyard to develop the naval engineering of the new ISA Super Sportivo 100ft GTO. Three 2000hp MAN engines and waterjet propulsion by the Swedish company MJP equip this 30-metres vessel to a top speed of 55 knots

Born into the profession, Marco Arnaboldi inherited the passion for yacht design from his father Angelo, but also his love for speed. Developing his father's concepts, he and the Studio Arnaboldi team transformed them into almost 80 designs of yachts and military boats (from 16 to 44 metres) that have reached and exceeded the 50-knots mark. Not offshore racing - these are real yachts, with all on-board comforts, or fast patrol boats armed with everything.

“We are a comprehensive marine engineering studio that has developed its own advanced research on hulls and materials. We can deal with every design aspect of the boat, from hull and deck construction to the interior,” explains Marco Arnaboldi. “It is essential that every detail is designed for the performance you want to achieve, with great attention to lightness. This means infusion construction with an epoxy-based vinylester resin sandwich, with carbon fibre and Kevlar reinforcements. Propulsion is a characterising trait and we have always used waterjet propulsion: in recent projects, we have relied on jets made by the Swedish company MJP (Marine Jet Power), the best performing on the market, and we have developed a constructive partnership with them.”

A superyacht with offshore performance

The new ISA Super Sportivo 100ft GTO M/Y Aldabra is the latest yacht to receive a fundamental contribution to its hull and propulsion from Studio Arnaboldi, which collaborated closely with the shipyard on the naval engineering design. In the first sea trials, the yacht reached a speed of 55 knots, exceeding theoretical calculations.

Styled by Marco Casali (Too Design studio), the ISA Super Sportivo 100ft GTO is powered by three MAN 12V turbodiesel engines with 2,000 horsepower each and MJP waterjet propulsion. On board, nothing had to be sacrificed in terms of comfort and refined furnishings to achieve the performance for which it was designed, thus fully meeting the precise requirements of its owner. The hull also ensures remarkable manoeuvrability: with the classic joystick and without the need to use the bow thruster (which is still present), this 30-metres yacht can be steered as if it were a normal day cruiser.

"An excellent power-to-weight ratio is always the basis for all sprinting performances," Marco Arnaboldi stresses. "But this should not lead you to believe that you have to compromise on interior fittings and materials. Lightness and design can be combined, not only by using modern materials such as laminates, but also solid wood and marble, which must of course be suitably processed. Here, too, the work of our studio’s consultants with the designers responsible for the styling was crucial to achieving the desired end result.”

ISA Super Sportivo 100ft GTO M/Y Aldabra will make its debut at Cannes Yachting Festival 2021 in September.

SEAPRO POWERS ULTIMATE CHARTERS

SIX THOUSAND HOURS PER YEAR. That’s how hard Ultimate Charters’ fleet of four boats is working.

So, when it came to choosing engines for two brand-new boats to add to the fleet, for Auckland-based Simon Brady, the Mercury SeaPro range was the choice.

The new boat Gatherer is equipped with a 300hp SeaPro commercial outboard and there’s one thing every charter passenger is impressed with: “The first thing people comment on when they jump on board is how quiet the engine is,” Simon says.

“The quietness and speed of the engine is significant in creating a good atmosphere for our passengers.

“From our skipper’s perspectives the engine is effortless, it’s smooth and it’s powerful. We’re pushing around a three-tonne boat, plus 900kgs of gear, and the engine does it without missing a beat.”

Ultimate Charters caters for novices through to experienced anglers with fishing charters in the outer Hauraki Gulf all year round.

Simon is working to update his entire fleet. Ultimate Charters is in the process of replacing some of its older vessels with New Zealand-built Extreme Boats.

In September, another new boat Hunter will be built and rigged with twin 225hp SeaPro commercial outboards. Ultimate Charters will continue to update the fleet and hopes to  fit them with the new V12 500hp SeaPro motors.

WAIKAWA’S NEW WORLD-CLASS CHEF

Hospitality recruitment in the current climate is difficult at best. To be able to attract a chef team with world class credentials is a dream. But that is what’s happened at the Waikawa Boating Club in the Marlborough Sounds.

Sandra Wareham has taken over the kitchen at the Waikawa club. The restaurant has been re-named  Bernie’s on the Wharf.

Sandra’s partner Stephen will be part of her team and they’re quite clear that Sandra is the lead in this kitchen.

Sandra qualified as a chef in 1996 and worked at the Naval & Military Club on St James Square, London. In what was a private club for gentleman of the British Armed Services, Sandra became the first female chef allowed into the kitchen in the club’s 400-year history.

Sandra became a sous chef for Chelsea Football Club where she catered for players and management in corporate boxes. She then became head chef  at GE Finance. At BT Leavesden she employed Stephen into her kitchen; then went on to marry him and have five kids together.

Sandra’s  most impressive place to work was  Roux on Riverside. Gordon Ramsay is also graduate of the Roux kitchen.

The name Bernie’s on the Wharf comes from Sandra’s long-standing nickname, having been a Burnham before marrying Stephen.

The Waikawa Boating Club is open to members and their guests and to any member of a Clubs of New Zealand affiliated club.

Here We Grow Again!

The Boat Works is ecstatic to announce Marine Trade Supplies & Chandlery store, the on-site mega-store for every aspect of boat repairs, maintenance and supplies related, will expand yet again.

Since opening nine years ago, the Chandlery has evolved from a modest trade store into the leading chandlery in South-East Queensland, bursting with international and Australian brands and a product range that is second to none.

In the past two years since the Superyacht yard began to attract larger boats, more vessels and more people to the area, Marine Trade Supplies & Chandlery has outgrown the 1,000-square-metre facility and will now expanding to an additional 500-square-metres from 1 September.

Director, John Lance, previously a Superyacht Captain with experience in the Med and Caribbean, says their growth is a sign of the rising take-up of boating.

“We’re really doing well and we can now expand to fill the entire building,” says John. “We need to bring on more stock to keep up with more boats and bigger boats.

“We’ve had five expansions over the nine years. Downstairs in the new area will be anchors, chain and more chandlery all on display. A bigger range of Highfield tenders and more lifestyle gear, such as water toys, scooters, fishing gear – the fun stuff!

“Upstairs will be boardroom and offices, and eventually incorporate a new crew apparel division encompassing all the major brands. The latest & greatest in sailing gear. In total, we’ll be nearly 1,500-square-metres. Our entry will move around the end of the building near The Galley Restaurant.

“September will be a month of renovations and reorganising to take occupancy of the entire buildings space which is close to a massive 1,500-square-metres. By October we hope to have all the structural changes done and the new stock arriving!”

On average, 300 people a day visit the store, from tradies and marine professionals to DIY boat owners – all of them amazed at the breadth and extent of the products on shelf.

Products range from boating accessories and deck hardware, paint, fibreglass, resin, plywood sheeting and thermo-lite board, to a full selection of marine safety equipment, all detailing supplies, antifoul, anchors, plumbing, electrical, LED lighting and Australian-made specialist ropes.

Among the brands represented are 3M, Gurit Composites epoxy range, RF Composites poly and vinylester range, Hella Lighting, Garmin and Fusion, Highfield Boats, Festool, Rupes, detailing products including 3M, CleanAworx, Farecla Profile and G range, Collinite. Aqualuma lighting, IRB Ropes and Braids, PWB anchor chain, Force Anchor Chain, Vetus Maxwell Winches and Rocna Anchors, Cathodic Anodes, Sail Racing and Musto Apparel.

On the paint side, all the big brands like International Yacht Paints, Awlgrip, Altex Yacht and Boat Paint, Jotun Marine, PPG Marine Paints, Hempel Paints, Wattyl Paints, Seahawk plus Prop Speed and Lightspeed for underwater lights.

Earlier in the year, the store added a dedicated Marine & Protective Coatings Division, overseen by paint expert, Kasey McAllan.

According to Kasey, an increase in refit projects & maintenance all round has led to a rise in demand for paints and various other products. “We are struggling to keep up with demand,” he says. “A boat we are currently servicing has just spent over $100,000 in paint and consumables. Staggering to see the reinvestment back into the boat, it certainly is a very busy time.”

Currently, there are 11 trained staff who are all boaties and know the ins and outs of their thousands of products. And if it’s not in stock, their friendly team is only too willing to place special orders for rushed delivery. Marine Trade Supplies is now looking to bring on more staff right now to keep pace with demand.

The Boat Works’ owner, Tony Longhurst’s commitment to the major marine facility in South-East Queensland has attracted vessels from all over Australia.

“We congratulate John and his team on the next giant leap in expanding their business,” he says.

“The Superyacht yard is truly a world-class facility which has brought in bigger boats, more boats and more people, spending on refit projects and maintenance. This precinct employs thousands of people and the flow on to the economy throughout the region is phenomenal, as vessel owners and crew spend locally.”

ELAN RECRUITS DREAM TEAM

IN AN AS-YET UN-NAMED PROJECT, Elan Yachts has joined forces with Pininfarina, Humphreys Yacht Design and Gurit to produce the ultimate performance cruising yacht. The project aims to combine the best in shipbuilding technology, naval architecture, and industrial design.

Elan will rely on its 75-year boat-building heritage for the creation of this new yacht, as well as a team of ‘best-in-business’ specialists to push the envelope in every aspect.

Both the exterior and interior aesthetics were designed by Pininfarina, embracing the future of sailing while simultaneously respecting and reinterpreting the classic elements that make Elan’s Slovenian-built boats so recognisable.

The boat’s design is by Humphreys Yacht Design, whose team is choosing a deeper standard draft and a lighter build. The rig will be taller and the sail area increased, resulting in a higher sail area to displacement ratio.

For this project the Elan composites team partnered with Gurit to produce composites with the best possible mechanical properties.

Details of this project will be revealed during the Cannes Yachting Festival in September 2021, while the yacht itself will be shown at Boot Dusseldorf in January 2022.

Palm Beach GT60 european debut at Cannes Yachting Festival 2021

PALM BEACH MOTOR YACHTS GT60 ARRIVES IN EUROPE

TO DEBUT AT CANNES YACHTING FESTIVAL 2021

Palm Beach GT60 is the new high-performance, high-tech flagship of the yard, ready to debut in Europe at the Cannes Yachting Festival 2021 (7th-12th September 2021). This new creation from the mind of yacht designer and CEO Mark Richards displays all the power, unmatched efficiency and smooth-running capabilities for which all Palm Beach models are known, but the GT Series brings additional contemporary styling cues and no-holds-barred top-end performance.

View layout here

“On the water the GT60 follows closely in the footsteps of the previously launched GT50. Both yachts prove that our build practices and engineering know-how results in a vessel that is at once stylish, luxurious, and has a performance curve that is unmatched in the industry,” says Richards. “No doubt the performance can be attributed directly to our weight-saving advanced construction techniques, including vacuum-infused carbon fiber in the deck and superstructure. This weight reduction and strength of our acclaimed performance-hull design sets the GT60 apart.”

In stateside sea trials last week near the company’s U.S. headquarters in Stuart, Florida, the new GT60 reached speeds exceeding 40 knots at wide open throttle on its twin Volvo IPS 1350 powerplants. Where the GT60 truly shines is in fuel efficiency that sees only 75 gallons per hour (combined, or roughly 37.5 per engine) operating at speeds of 35 knots. The calculated range would allow owners to travel from Miami to Nassau, Bahamas, in just over 5 hours, burning less than 42% of the total fuel reserves.

“The GT60 is an absolute dream result, that our team worked tirelessly on perfecting over the past 12 months. To have such a beautiful boat wrapped around a twin engine system, that outperforms similar sized competing products that use 3 engines—or twice the horsepower—is a truly remarkable achievement.” said Richards. The GT60 debuting in Miami is running twin Volvo IPS 1350s, with a total output of 2,000 HP.

The material choices, and their placement in the GT60’s construction means that the boat has a naturally low center of gravity to aid performance, while the warped semi-displacement hull design takes cues from racing yachts to deliver a soft and stable ride at all speeds. Palm Beach then takes engineering several steps further to ensure perfect balance, running carbon fiber jackshafts from the pods to the mid-mounted engines, ensuring the bulk weight of the blocks are centered and low.

The GT60 features an enormous single-piece curved glass windshield, large electric side and aft windows in the salon, and full-beam entertaining spaces in both the salon and cockpit. The layouts are practical and modern, while still retaining the true nautical feel of a cruising yacht.

As with all Palm Beach Motor Yachts, customers can expect to enjoy the ability to customize the layouts and available options to ensure their high-performance GT60 is perfectly tailored to their individual needs and desires

MALONEY WINS FINN GOLD

Elusive to New Zealand sailors for many years, the prestigious Finn Gold Cup has been claimed by Kiwi Andy Maloney – the second Kiwi in 18 months to get his hands on the trophy.

Maloney went into the final day in Porto (Portugal) with a narrow five-point lead but banked three solid scores to win his first world title. What made it even more special was that Josh Junior, who went in as defending champion after his historic victory in 2019, finished third.

The pair have a unique relationship, working extremely closely together, and it’s clearly paying dividends. It just means the Olympic selectors now have a very difficult decision to make with only one able to compete at the Tokyo Games.

Maloney finished seven points ahead of Spain’s Joan Cardona, with Junior a further three points back in third.

“It feels awesome for the Finn Gold Cup to be staying in New Zealand after Josh won it last time,” he said. “It’s also my first Olympic class world championship, so that’s pretty special as well. And to have both Josh and I on the podium is also really cool.”
